After the scaling and root planing procedure, your gums will probably be irritated and/or slightly sore for several days. To help relieve the pain and cleanse the treated area, rinse your mouth in a mixture of warm salt water (one teaspoon of salt dissolved in eight ounces of warm water) two or three times a day. When you brush and floss, remember to do so gently to avoid irritating the area further.
For swelling or stiffness in the treated area, place a cold cloth or compress on the area in addition to taking pain-relieving medication. During the two or three days following your procedure, avoid eating chewy or hard food to encourage proper healing. If swelling or pain persists after several days, contact our dentist as soon as possible.
