In office tooth whitening has become the new rage in appearance enhancement. This is a procedure that can be done in the dental office or at home and each has its advantages and disadvantages. The in-office procedure usually takes one hour and uses a concentrated whitening. It is often advertised as “ZOOM” whitening because of the fancy light utilized. Unfortunately, research has shown the light to have little or no effect but you can leave the office with whiter teeth in an hour due to the concentration of the whitener. People are used to getting tips and toes and hair done by someone else and this fits right in. However, the concentrated solution can make the teeth sensitive…so can any other whitener if used too long. We tend to recommend the at home version because you can whiten as often as you want, there is less danger of getting the concentrated solution on your gums, the cost is significantly less and your time is not tied up in a dental chair for an hour or more. We also don’t see as much tooth sensitivity.
